1940s Picnic

I've finally joined the land of blogging after years of following other sewing blogs!  I have to admit I was glued to LiveJournal years ago but as impatient as I am when I sew, stopping to take pictures and write about what I'm sewing has never happened (a shame, I know).

Recently I decided to start up a local costuming group based on interest and we had our first event this past Saturday.  Being that our area doesn't have many venues for impromptu costuming events, we decided to have a small picnic at the local museum with a 1940s theme.  Mostly this was so I had an excuse to use a vintage pattern I had picked up before my wedding and had never sewed.  Originally it was intended as a going-away suit in white wool but since my husband got shot in the eye with a paintball the weekend before the wedding (boy, is that a story, let me tell you!) I never got a chance to put the suit together.  I did however, manage to finish my wedding dress and the wedding went off without a hitch, save for the eye patch in all of our wedding pictures.

This is similar to the Du Barry pattern  that I used for my dress, my camera is being fussy at the moment and not cooperating.  The only difference was the sleeves, which were 3/4 instead of short sleeves.

Using a stretch gray twill, I found after I started cutting out my fabric that I was literally five inches short from what I needed.  In the spirit of being resourceful, I took an old skirt I was going to give to Goodwill and cut it up to use as the contrast collar and cuffs, even stealing the zipper from my skirt.  My grandmother would have been proud!

Here are some pictures from the event.  Unfortunately I don't have any alone, we were too excited with the prospect of pictures to take solo shots!
